Disease prevention - vaccines vs. staying home when sick

Updated: May 3, 2021

Vaccine Effectiveness: 38% to 50%

So...in every 100 people 38 to 50 people may have been protected against influenza.

Coming into work when sick

By: Dr Brad McKay

A study conducted by YouGovResearch Services (2019) and commissioned by Heinz has shown that two out of three Australian workers are putting their colleagues, customers, and others at risk by going into work when they are sick this winter. It showed that more than half of Australian workers (58 per cent) say they have to be really sick to take a day off work, even though they are entitled to 10 days of sick leave each year.

If the vaccine is 20% to 60% effective, but 58% of people are still going into work sick, will the influenza vaccine reduce the spread of disease?

Should we be forced to have the flu jab to keep our jobs when it is only 20%-60% effective?

OR

Should we do more to ensure workers to stay at home when they're sick?
